Talk about shame, it only exists in Japan.

Shame I think is something that is universal. I mean when you do something that deviates from the norm and is not heroic you are expected to feel bad about it. Retreat in a cocoon and think seriously about what you have done. But there is one class of people that the word does not have any meaning - Politicians.

By virtue of their interests and maybe survival a politician can say something today and change in the next few months. The reasons given are usually not convincing. Take for example one Daniel arap Moi. He prefers to be called retired President rather than former president.

When Kibaki was elected President he did not mince words about his predecessor “Corruption will cease to be a way of life in Kenya,” he told a packed crowd at the Uhuru park where he was sworn in.

In effect what Kibaki was saying was that Moi’s who was present had a questionable integrity. He had allowed corruption to be a way of life.

Moi did not hide his contempt for Kibaki. He trashed his free education principles and anything else he thought was going wrong. He called Kiabki’s government a government that is led by tribally motivated individuals who had no interest for Kenyans.

He worked hard with the ODM to ensure that the draft constitution was defeated in the referendum. He went round with the ODM luminaries and at the end of it all the thing was overwhelmingly trashed by Kenyans.

But things have since changed for him. There are reports that he regularly visits State House and probably relives with nostalgia the memories of 24 years as tenant of the house on the hill. If the late whispers columnist Wahome Mutahi was still alive he would write another “Mugathe Mubogothi” (The dreaming excellency).

That aside, the man now has a job, as peace envoy to the Southern Sudan peace process. He is an advisor to the man who wittingly and arrogantly says that a university cannot be set up for a man and his wife. It must be for all.

Moi has changed tune. He is a supporter of Kibaki par excellence. He is not a tribalist. Initially he was, Moi used to tell us. He has the interest of Kenyans at heart. Formerly as opposition chief he was only interested in seeing KANU out of power. Now he is the best to develop this country. And on and on on.

Moi says that he wants to see Kibaki rule in 2007-2012. But I can hear more than this. I can hear him say. “Mzee you have been good. You have never let me suffer a day of want. I can sleep comfortably and wake up tomorrow knowing that my life is secure, nobody will harass me nor my sons for evils committed during my tenure at State house.”

I can hear him say “ there is grace in KIbaki. A man who is not interested in ‘yaliyopita’ and is more of a 'fuata nyayo' convert.”

But above all I can hear Kibaki say this is my life. It is about my people. I don’t want to be harassed when I retire. I should live comfortably like an elder statesman.

For Moi the cost is lesser, shamelessly swallow the vitrilous and nasty words about Kibaki and keep afloat than take on a man who has given you a lifeline.

Talk about shame, it only exists in Japan.

The Professor has Spoken

Politics in Kenya is getting interesting by the day. Retired president Daniel ArapMoi has said he will support and campaign for the president. Yet, after the humiliation he got from the public in 2002, and the then NARC coalition, he stands by his word. “I am convinced that president Kibaki ought to be given a chance to complete the constitutionally accepted two term tenure”, he told journalists at a press conference the first his held since he retired.

He has been known as the professor of politics. After ruling this country for 24 years maybe he is. Or he is just trying to humiliate the Orange democratic movement which he overwhelmingly supported during the referendum. He is now supporting his one time vice president, political enemy and now friend.

The two are said to have been holding meetings regularly and this decision to back Kibaki was expected. Well, many people sight this move as another project by Moi and say it will not be successful just like project Uhuru.

By supporting Kibaki I guess Moi has shown that indeed he has no time to support ODM and this is just a message to Ruto. Moi has not been happy with the young man who he nurtured into politics. Especially, after going against his wish that KANU does not join ODM.

Politics is becoming very juicy in this country. And I for sure will definitely be waiting for the surprises as they come.

Orange Democrat? Think again.

The other day I was telling you about the search for a straw to hold on.

There is a new development in the straw that I feel I should tell you.

Read On.

There are several things that are bound to happen every election year. One of them is that the sun will rise from the east and set in the west. Two is that the mirror will always reflect your image. And three Raila Odinga will every election year change his political party.

I don’t want to go the history way because the jury is still out there to tell whether Raila is a true democrat or just a wolf in a sheepskin.

So we are told that Raila and his allies have abandoned the Orange Democratic Party Kenya and moved in to own the brand ‘Orange’ from a little known city lawyer Mugambi Imanyara.

The reason is meant to beat Kalonzo who made away with ODM-K and pulled a fast one on Raila and his allies.

Men, if you thought that you can only watch comedy made in the USA on TV think again, it is right here with us. Just like President Kibaki says sit back “Ujienyoy”.

I can assure you that we have not seen enough of the intrigues, carpet pulling and any other dirty trick politicians can play on their opponents.

Kalonzo Musyoka thought he had made it, now he has been left with only a shell that is led by one dimunitive shrilly voiced Daniel Maanzo.

Two he is aligned to a colorless outfit LPK led by an equally colorless and dimunitive Professor Julia Ojiambo whom until Kalonzo joined was only known to be the only woman holding hands in the men dorminated ODM Kenya presidential race.

Now that the brand orange is in Raila’s hands, what happens to Kalonzo who previously was accused of being a lone ranger.

Will he continue praying the lone ranger tactics? Will he rejoin the ODM if he wants a stake in the presidency?

So which orange is the real orange, Kalonzo Musyoka’s or Raila Odinga’s, which democrat are you Orange Democratic Movement or Orange Democratic Movement Kenya?.

We have not seen enough yet.

Crooks and Cons

Ngugi wa Thiong'o, that self exiled Kenyan literary icon must have our MPs in mind when he wrote his master piece "Devil on the Cross." Now the book is not about the devil himself but about present day day devils who can stop at nothing in stealing from the masses.

In the book, Ngugi profiles a group of men who are out to outsmart each other in reaping from the common person. The comedy is when one of them tries to explain how he literaly steals chicken - by tying a maize germ to a string and then pulling it when a chicken swallows it. The guy was ejected from the congregation because he was nobody's contemporary thief.

To them he was old fashioned, small time and not anywhere near the makers of millions from other peoples sweat. The winner of the day was the guy who came up with an idea to steal from the people by tying rubber tubes to their brains and sapping their energy without them knowing. To the congregation his idea was god send.

Why I am retelling this story is because I have heard that our MPs hope to send themselves home with a lucrative package of KShs 6.8 Million (USD 100,000) . The argument is that this money will be a pat in the back for the 'good' work that they have done for the nation in the last five years.

Of course a number of them have argued that they do not need the money, but trust me, I can bet my last coin that when the amendment will be passed in parliament there will very few MPs to do it and the so called opposers will be laughing all the way to the bank. (The minimum number is 30 but as long as a member does not notify the speaker that there is no quorum, the members can be as few as twenty)

If the amendment passes, and I have never heard of any MP who resisted money, these contemporary crooks and cons will have succeeded in stealing from us. They will not have tied any maize germ to a string neither will they seize and mug anybody by the roadside but they will have stolen from our taxes, just like Ngugi's rubber tube character.

For the 222 Mps to take home Kshs 6.8M, it will be a total of Kshs 1.5 billion gone down the drain. This money is enough to construct several primary schools or dispensaries or even tarmac 100 kilometers of a road anywhere.

But who cares, which MP is in need of a school, or dispensary or even a tarmac road unless it is material for the campaign? Who cares about the poor people anyway?

I am now profiling constituencies in the runner up to the elections and I can tell you that poverty amongst the people is sickening. Who will save the people from the squalid kind of lives the lead by sending away this crooks and cons away like it happened in Ngugi's epic novel.

My only worry is that we will for sure send them away like it happened in 2002 but we will replace them with a new crop of thugs.

Who will save us.?

GAGGING THE WATCHDOG

"When a story includes unnamed parties who are not disclosed and the same becomes the subject of a legal tussle as to who is meant, then the editor shall be obligated to disclose the identity of the party or parties referred to."

The above clause in the Media Bill recently passed by Parliament is what is causing all the uproar.Trust me,we the scribes, people's messengers,4th Estate, people's watchdog or whatever you want to call us have a reason to be worried."They" are out to literally put duct tape over our mouths! Don't listen to the Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister,Martha Karua, she has got HATE written all over her face!

So what's all the hullabaloo about? Well,an MP called Muriuki Karue sneaked in the above quoted clause late last week just when the House was adjourning.Don't forget, the house had no quorum-(at least 30 mp's).There were only 27.Information minister Mutahi Kagwe was in the house,he didn't raise a finger towards the speaker.Martha was in the house, she supported it.Why? She had a nasty exerience with the Media....maybe 2 years ago? Remember the Kiss 100 saga? She sued for defamation. She was so sarcastic and hateful that the Media gave her a black out for sometime. That's why!!!

So her argument is that-the clause only requires editors to reveal their sources in Court if the "slandered party" was not directly mentioned. That is,the news story implied that the complainant was the one implied by the journalist.Read the clause again. When you say "sources" THAT is an unnamed party! The Law Society of Kenya sees that,(and they are lawyers who know what they are talking about!) The civil society see it,Ambassadors (US,UK ) read the mischief. So who is trying to fool who Martha? Huh? Tell me!

So what does this clause mean? Why is it dangerous? This is why:

1) It contradicts Section 79 of the Constitution protecting Freedom of Expression.

(2) By criminalising innuendo, the clause is a soft way of tracing sources of stories.

(3) The clause is self-defeating because the same Media Bill protects CONFIDENTIALITY of news sources.

(4) Criminalising innuendo is unconstitutional, namely that it provides for self-incrimination (upfront declaration of guilt). But then, here is where the burden of proof lies on the complainant.

(5) The clause contradicts an existing legislation, the Witness Protection Act which, among other things, allows the Attorney General to change identity of whistle blowers and even relocate them to another country at the expense of the State.

See what I mean? We will NOT name our sources.Period.
Martha and your Lapdog,Karue Muriuki, the battle lines have just been drawn!!!
President Kibaki, all eyes are on you.You can make good history by rejecting the Bill or History can judge you harshly if you assent to the Bill. All eyes on you!!

In need of a straw to hold on.

I was talking to a lawyer friend about the ODM leadership wrangles pitting the registered chairman Daniel maanzo and the interim chairman Henry Kosgey. You can read Kalonzo Musyoka and Raila Odinga squaring it out.

What came to the fore is that the wrangles are healthy because they are aimed at addressing those teething problems and leadership ambitions now rather than later. I could not actually agree more about the healthy debate especially when he said that without violence the debate should rage on.

But I knew why he saw it this way. It is because he is on the winning side. He is representing the dimunitive Maanzo who however happens to be made of a different kind of mettle. Maanzo despite his size has a shrilly voice and his body lacks muscle that would challenge the much physical politicians from the Raila side.

So what drives him? If you have keenly followed the ODM tussle, you might know that Kalonzo and Raila are strange bedfellows. At one time they are holding hands and shouting unity but in the next moment they are crying foul, backstabbing each other at the slightest opportunity.

So when Kalonzo shifted from LDP to LPK he carried with him his supporters. But in the meantime when he did it he had ensured that the party of the orange was in his control. What with Maanzo who comes from his backyard being chairman and a little known and undecided fella who also happens to be ODM-Kenya registered Secretary General, Mr Abraham Chepkonga.

Hell knows no fury than a Agwambo scorned. From that moment Raila and his team has been trying tong and neck to get back the party that he claims belongs to the people. The people can only be where he is presumably. From the day Kalonzo bolted with the party Raila has never hidden his disdain for Kalonzo whom at one time he declared as having desserted ODM Kenya.

I am not a fan of Kalonzo Musyoka and his cry baby politics style, but I can say that the man has guts. When everybody else does not want to rub Raila the wrong way, (ask Najib Balala and Professor Anyang' Nyong'o whose brains are in Raila's pocket) Kalonzo just stole the thunder from him. He actually pulled the carpet under his feet and before Agwambo knew the was only egg in his face. You can fool some people for some time but you cannot fool all the people for the all the times
Now let me ask, Raila ran away from the party his own dad founded FORD Kenya to the NDP Tinga. He abandoned tinga for the cockerel KANU and even before Moi would figure out the gears Raila had bolted. He abandoned the dream party NARC for LDP and abandoned the LDP for ODM. Now am told that the slogan is hammer Nyundo and he could be out of ODM Kenya.

Imagining that party affairs are like love affairs, it is usually painful to be abandoned by a lover.
What does Raila feel when he abandons others, Cockish and Masculine? What does he feel after being abandoned by Kalonzo Weak, Vulnerable and in need of a straw to hold on.
Please Agwambo tell me which is which?

The fall of the Orange Party.

The kenyan political scene is becoming intresting by the day.I predicted earlier on that indeed at a particular point in time ODM-K was going to split and that is what is actually happening.

Kalonzo Musyoka realized that unless he plays smart in this political game Raila was going to humiliate him like a small kid, well he still insists that he is a full member of ODM but says that if "such a time comes and he has to go it alone but with the support of the people then he is willing to take up that bold step".

The race is getting tougher and tougher with countrywide rallies between the two candidates. At the end of the day its going to be tough for both Raila and Kalonza who are now fighting it out for the presidency the others are just stooges who will step down at the end.

Hide and Seek?

As a young boy growing up in the chilly Eastern Mau escarpment of the Rift Valley province, one of the things that I enjoyed most was to play hide and seek.

You know that game where a fella closes his eyes then the rest of the team disperses for the him or her to look for them. The one who scores is the one who can’t be easily traced. And when you are in hiding, you can play all the tricks to the one seeking you.

Now that I am grown up I can’t play hide and seek anymore. But that does not mean that adults do not play hide and seek. They do it and cherish doing it.

Look for example at what is happening at our political scenario, it is a pure game of hide and seek. Guys are playing the artful dodger who is hard to find.

One day Uhuru is at ODM Kenya waving his left hand’s index finger and at the same time singing “Solidarity forever”. The next time he is giving conditions to ODM Kenya and before we breathe a sigh of relief he bolts.

The next Day Kalonzo says we want nomination of the presidential flagbearer by delegates system. His political nemesis Raila Odinga says NO we want consensus. Then “a secret” report is leaked to the media and it is alleged that Kalonzo is the favourite to beat Kibaki.

What happens? Kalonzo changes tune and becomes a consensus diehard. He is ready to sacrifice his life for it. The others call him a chameleon. He starts crying foul and the next moment he bolts to a small outfit called LPK. And from there he starts playing dirty, he takes control of ODM by ensuring that the chairman is allied to him.

Now he is walking tall because he knows that nobody can “Tunya.” I saw the smirk on his face that was telling Ruto that just like a smart hide and seek player would say that I am smarter than you guys.

Then there is Ngilu, the queen master of doublespeak, she is NARC chairperson, she is a government minister, an activist to boot, and a proponent of good governance. So when activists were busy trying to enter the precincts of parliament to disrupt house business, they were arrested. She moves with speed to secure one of them.

Talk about good governance and collective responsibility. The law is law and should be observed at all times.

So, she teams up with Raila Odinga master party hopper and they have tea. When they emerge from the meeting they are all smiles. Happy that they are ready to spoil for Kalonzo.

Watch this space and I can assure you that the hide and seek game is what the eating class has perfected in a bid to remain relevant.

No need to get stressed up because things are not going your politically, relax and enjoy the game.
